Best Delivery in Existence

I truly love this series. I wish they would record the entire dictionary the same way. If you want to listen to a super enjoyable vocabulary, this is it. The words might not be as advanced as you are looking for, but the fun in listening is worth the few dollars spent: five stars.

Ineffective

I bought volume 1 & 2 together. Here's my review of volume 1 which also applies to volume 2:

I bought this product with hopes of a more enjoyable way to expand my vocabulary. I tried to like this product (especially since it's a good chunk of money) and I gave it a fair amount of my time. In the end, I found it to be ineffective for these reasons:
- The script is boring. It tries to be witty, but really comes of as cheesy/corny
- I found myself constantly rewinding. The material just doesn't sink in. The stories and dialogue aren't memorable. Perhaps this is so because of the pace. I'd rather have fewer words and actually learn those words, than sweep through many words and have to backtrack. I'd say on average the amount of time spent listening to the material was TRIPLED because of rewinding.
- The voices are a bit stuffy and robotic to me

In the end I stopped listening to Word Smart. It was just too laborious.

Light entertainment only

I bought this CD thinking that it would be a productive way to spend my commutes in the morning. It was however only mildly more productive than listening to idiot DJs on the radio. I think that I knew 80% of the words by 15 years of age. The only benefit gained was hearing them pronouced but being British I had grave suspicions concerning the US pronounciations! The two presenters are funny and quite listenable. I would recommend these CDs to high school students who do not read books but still hope to master thre English language well enough to pass exams.

Fun Way to Expand Your Vocabulary

This sets contains 5 CDs, and goes over about 230 words. Good number of the words on these recordings seem to be on a high-school level.

The first CD covers the vocabulary related to: The Raw and The Cooked; Stop and Go; Crime and Punishment.

The second CD coverts the vocabulary related to: At Home and Abroad; Hide and Seek; War and Peace.

The third CD covers the vocabulary related to: The Fiendish and The Friendly; Body and Soul; Chaos and Control.

The fourth CD covers the vocabulary related to: Old News; Rich Man, Poor Man; The Rise and Fall.

The fifth CD covers the vocabulary related to: Church and State; Franks and Beans.

The recordings are very entertaining to listen to. After defining the words, they are dramatized, often in a humorous way, adding fun to the learning process.

“To Buy or Not to Buy! Educators, lovers of theatre and great literature – take note! Late in the 1990s, Harper Row began to release on cassettes the Arkangel Complete Shakespeare, all of which I reviewed in one paper or another. Using some of the best of the young theatrical talent in Great Britain and some of the older established stars of stage and screen, the producers gave us readings of every single word of every single play by Shakespeare, including the seldom-performed “Two Noble Kinsmen” which is partially by Shakespeare.
Well, hold on! Audio Partners has been contracted to release the entire set on CDs. The trick is that you cannot purchase the individual sets but are required to purchase the entire package of 38 plays for $600. That is 98 CDs in all with a playing time of just over 101 hours! Libraries and school departments take note.
Hearing them as they were released on tape in batches of four or five, I was impressed mostly with the enormity of the project but found some things to quibble about. Casting Oberon and Titania with a pair whose voices were South African or Jamaican (no Henry Higgins, I) made some sense in that it emphasized their other-worldly-ness. So did assigning Malvolio in “Twelfth Night” to an actor with a distinct Scottish accent, but giving Mercutio in “Romeo and Juliet” to the same actor was absurd. Then too there is that sudden sound effect of a train pulling out of a station in the middle of “All's Well That Ends Well”! Granted there was a production current then that did place the play in more modern times, but when one is hearing a recording with no clue as to setting, the result was jarring and should have been omitted.

In the grander roles such as Hamlet, Othello and the like, the younger actors give modern readings which might strike some as slighting demands of the high poetry. And those who long for the grander readings can turn to the re-releases of the old Shakespeare Recording Society sets.
One great disadvantage to the cassettes is that you could locate a specific scene only with much fast forwarding. With CDs, of course, you can jump to any scene by pressing the Skip button on your player. When a scene continues onto another disc, the tracking list tells you at which line the scene picks up. The price might be prohibitive to all but an institution – but I feel that every library should find its way to purchasing the complete set in much the same way that many purchased the complete set of BBC Shakespeare videos.” – Customer Review on Amazon.com

The Art of War

The Art of War is a Chinese military treatise written during the 6th century BC by Sun Tzu. Composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare, it has long been praised as the definitive work on military strategies and tactics of its time.

The Art of War is one of the oldest books on military strategy in the world. Like a work of mathematics or science, much of the work is dedicated to defining its concepts in what has been described as a series of formulas. It is the first and one of the most successful works on strategy and has had a huge influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, and beyond. Sun Tzu was the first to recognize the importance of positioning in strategy and that position is affected both by objective conditions in the physical environment and the subjective opinions of competitive actors in that environment. He taught that strategy was not planning in the sense of working through a to-do list, instead it requires quickly responding appropriately to changing conditions. Planning works in a controlled environment, but in a competitive environment, competing plans collide creating situations that no one plans.

The book was first translated into a European language in 1782 by French Jesuit Jean Joseph Marie Amiot, and had possibly influenced Napoleon, and even the planning of Operation Desert Storm. Leaders as diverse as Mao Zedong, General Pervez Musharraf, Vo Nguyen Giap, and General Douglas MacArthur have claimed to have drawn inspiration from the work.

The Art of War has also been applied, with much success, to business and managerial strategies.

Durante la reproducción, la pista en inglés y la pista en español se intercambian para que tu mente reciba ambos idiomas en ambos hemisferios cerebrales. Como las pistas dicen prácticamente lo mismo durante la grabación, esto también hace que tu cerebro pueda correlacionar la información.

Está diseñado para escucharlo mientras duermes o descansas. Antes de irte a dormir, solo enciéndelo y deja que se repita toda la noche a un volúmen muy poco perceptible, como un murmullo lejano. Como fondo estan grabados sonidos de la naturaleza que te ayudarán a tener un sueño o un descanso más profundo y relajante. Irás encontrando el volúmen adecuado para ti. También es recomendable que lo escuches una o dos veces por semana con audífonos a un volumen en que puedas escuchar claramente toda la grabación.

Por la naturaleza y finalidad de la grabación es muy posible que te cause sueño tratar de escucharlo concientemente, es una respuesta normal, y no importa si te duermes mientras lo haces. Por eso es importante que No lo escuches cuando manejes maquinaria, medios de transporte, o en áreas o situaciones donde quedarse dormido represente algún riesgo. The story follows Oliver as he escapes the workhouse and runs away to London. Here he receives an education in villainy from the criminal gang of Fagin that includes the brutal thief Bill Sikes, the famous ‘Artful Dodger’ and Nancy, Bill’s whore. Oliver is rescued by the intervention of a benefactor - Mr Brownlow - but the mysterious Monks gets the gang to kidnap the boy again. Nancy intervenes but is murdered viciously by Sikes after she has showed some redeeming qualities and has discovered Monk’s sinister intention. The story closes happily and with justice for Bumble and the cruel Monks who has hidden the truth of Oliver’s parentage out of malice. Accusations were made that the book glamorised crime (like the ‘Newgate Group’ of the period) but Dickens wisely disassociated himself from criminal romances. His achievement was in fact in presenting the underworld and problems of poverty to the well-off in a way rarely attempted previously.

This is a collection of 22 charming Japanese fairy tales, originally published in 1905, selected and translated by Yei Theodora Ozaki. Included are legends and fairy tales about peasants and kings, god and bad forces, princesses, animals, the sea, and the sky.

"This collection of Japanese fairy tales is the outcome of a suggestion made to me indirectly through a friend by Mr. Andrew Lang. They have been translated from the modern version written by Sadanami Sanjin. These stories are not literal translations, and though the Japanese story and all quaint Japanese expressions have been faithfully preserved, they have been told more with the view to interest young readers of the West than the technical student of folk - lore. Grateful acknowledgment is due to Mr. Y. Yasuoka, Miss Fusa Okamoto, my brother Nobumori Ozaki, Dr. Yoshihiro Takaki, and Miss Kameko Yamao, who have helped me with translations.
The story which I have named "The Story of the Man who did not Wish to Die" is taken from a little book written a hundred years ago by one Shinsui Tamenaga. It is named Chosei Furo, or "Longevity." "The Bamboo-cutter and the Moon-child" is taken from the classic " Taketari Monogatari," and is not classed by the Japanese among their fairy tales, though it really belongs to this class of literature.
The pictures were drawn by Mr. Kakuzo Fujiyama, a Tokio artist.
In telling these stories in English I have followed my fancy in adding such touches of local color or description as they seemed to need or as pleased me, and in one or two instances I have gathered in an incident from another version. At all times, among my friends, both young and old, English or American, I have always found eager listeners to the beautiful legends and fairy tales of Japan, and in telling them I have also found that they were still unknown to the vast majority, and this has encouraged me to write them for the children of the West." -- From The Preface

El pozo y el péndulo (título original en inglés: The Pit and the Pendulum) es una de los cuentos más famosos y celebrados de Edgar Allan Poe. Está considerado como uno de los relatos más espeluznantes dentro de la literatura de terror, pues transmite el abandono, la desorientación, el desconcierto y la desesperanza de una persona que sabe que va a morir.
En él Poe demuestra su dominio sobre el lenguaje y las técnicas narrativas más efectivas para hacernos sentir partícipes de los agobiantes pensamientos que tiene el torturado.
El nombre del relato proviene de un pozo situado dentro de la celda en el que el protagonista siente a veces deseos de lanzarse para acabar con su sufrimiento y un péndulo con una guadaña con el que le torturan.

El gato negro (título original en inglés: The Black Cat) es un cuento de horror del escritor estadounidense Edgar Allan Poe, aparecido en el periódico Saturday Evening Post de Filadelfia en su número del 19 de agosto de 1843. La crítica lo considera uno de los más espeluznantes de la historia de la literatura.
Es uno de los más conocidos cuentos siniestros de Poe, así como uno de sus grandes relatos psicológicos. La combinación de ambos elementos, horror y psicología, parece conducir directamente a la expresión terror psicológico, que hoy sabemos inspirada en la singularidad artística de este autor y que podría definirse como aquella fórmula literaria que, entre otras cosas, aspira a conjugar en una síntesis superior miedo, enajenación y arte.

El corazón delator (título original en inglés: The Tell-Tale Heart), también conocido como El corazón revelador, es un cuento del escritor estadounidense Edgar Allan Poe, publicado por primera vez en el periódico literario The Pioneer en enero de 1843. Poe lo republicó más tarde en su periódico The Broadway Journal en su edición del 23 de agosto de 1845. Se dice que fue uno los cuentos que inauguró el llamado terror psicológico.

La Metamorfosis

La Metamorfosis (Die Verwandlung, en su título original en alemán) es un relato de Franz Kafka, publicado en 1915 y que narra la historia de Gregor Samsa, un tratante de telas que vive con su familia a la que él mantiene con su sueldo, que un buen día amanece convertido en una criatura no identificada claramente en ningún momento, pero que tiende a ser reconocida como una especie de cucaracha gigante. Federico García Lorca nació en el municipio de Fuente Vaqueros, Granada (España), en el seno de una familia de posición económica desahogada, el 5 de junio de 1898 y fue bautizado con el nombre de Federico del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús García Lorca; su padre fue Don Federico García Rodríguez, un hacendado, y su madre, Doña Vicenta Lorca, maestra de escuela que fomentó el gusto literario a su hijo.
Desde la edad de 2 años, según uno de sus biógrafos, Edwin Honig, Federico García Lorca mostró su habilidad para aprender canciones populares y a muy tierna edad escenificaba en miniatura oficios religiosos. Su salud fue frágil y no empezó a andar hasta los cuatro años. Leyó en su casa la obra de Victor Hugo y de Miguel de Cervantes

Las Fábulas de Esopo (Esopo)

Pocos datos existen sobre la biografía de Esopo, ya en la época clásica su figura real se vio rodeada de elementos legendarios e incluso se ha puesto en duda su existencia por algunos historiadores. Sus fábulas se utilizaban como libro de texto en las escuelas y Platón dice que Sócrates se sabía de memoria los apólogos de Esopo. El pueblo de Atenas encargó al escultor Lisipo la realización de un busto del poeta.
Según una tradición muy difundida, nació en Frigia (el Esopo es un río frigio), aunque hay quien lo hace originario de Tracia, Samos, Egipto o Sardes. Vivió en la Grecia Antigua en el siglo VII a.C.
Sobre él se conoció una gran cantidad de anécdotas e incluso descripciones sobre su físico recogidas en la "Vida de Esopo", escrita en el siglo XIV por Planudo, un monje benedictino, si bien es dudosa su validez histórica.
Así, se cuenta que Esopo fue esclavo de un tal Jadmón o Janto de Samos, que le dio la libertad. Debido a su gran reputación por su talento para el apólogo, Creso le llamó a su corte, le colmó de favores y le envió después a consultar al oráculo de Delfos, a ofrecer sacrificios en su nombre, y a distribuir recompensas entre los habitantes de aquella ciudad. Irritado por los fraudes y la codicia de aquel pueblo de sacerdotes, Esopo les dirigió sus sarcasmos y, limitándose a ofrecer a los dioses los sacrificios mandados por Creso, devolvió a este príncipe las riquezas destinadas a los habitantes de Delfos.
éstos, para vengarse, escondieron entre los equipajes de Esopo una copa de oro consagrada a Apolo, le acusaron de robo sacrílego y le precipitaron desde lo alto de la roca Hiampa. Posteriormente se arrepintieron, y ofrecieron satisfacciones y una indemnización a los descendientes de Esopo que se presentaran a exigirla; el que acudió fue un rico comerciante de Samos llamado Jadmon, descendiente de aquel a quien Esopo perteneciera cuando fue esclavo.

Harry está nervioso, distraído y asombrado de no tener noticias del mundo mágico, pensando en los planes del tenebroso Lord Voldemort luego de su reciente regreso. Mientras está acostado en el jardín de su Tía Petunia, escucha una fuerte explosión y esperanzado de que se trate de algo mágico, decide ir a investigar. Al no encontrar nada, el primo de Harry, Dudley Dursley, lo molesta diciéndole que lo ha escuchado hablar dormido, hablando de un tal Cedric (quien murió a finales del año escolar anterior a manos de Lord Voldemort).

Libro3:AudioLibro Harry Potter y Las Reliquias de la Muerte

Este es el untimo libro del famoso Harry Potter. Cualquiera puede encontrar aquí aventuras, romances, peligro, fantasia e incluso muerte. Esta ingeniosamente escrito pero deja algunas preguntas abiertas que aun que no son el centro de las preguntas sin contestar algunos se pueden preguntar que pasa con ellas. Tiene un final que la gente calificaria de "feliz" pero que enrealidad es solo un final. No puedo decir que pasa porque estaria mal y no quiero estropear nada pero es muy intenso y profundo, y merece la pena el leerlo (o escucharlo).

Pueden alternar descargas asi se les hará más fácil...

La ultima pelicula de Will Smith esta basada en esta novela titulada
"Soy Legenda" de Richard Matheson...
